Class Intro
πWhat to wear
Students should wear βgym classβ attire. T-shirt with athletic shorts or pants, and athletic sneakers that can be tied tight! No open-toe or slip-on shoes. Any type of running or training shoes should work. We have a shoe-cleaning station at the gym but we also would appreciate clean shoes when entering class. Long hair should be tied UP. Please avoid wearing any clothing or jewelry that could get caught during class. Please bring a water bottle! There is a water fountain in between our two sides for refills, our goal is to limit the use of disposable cups as much as possible. Please make sure beverages stay completely off the gym floor. We have 3 bathrooms. Boys (Blue door), Girls (Purple door) are located on the second half of the gym by the water fountain, and the Family (Red door) is located in the back right-hand corner of our main facility next to the blue wall. For a smoother start to class please have all students use the restroom prior to the scheduled start time of class.
πͺEntrance
Enter UP from our back parking lot (Purple door). Note that transition periods from one class to another could be more congested please avoid congregating in our front desk area. Cubbies to store items during class are located through the building. Please have students save βhorse-playβ for class! Avoid any physical activity outside our fenced βgym areaβ including our lobby, viewing areas, restroom, and the outside of our facility. Please keep students off the interior fences at all times!
β‘οΈDay 1
We have 4 different warm-up areas. Either the front desk or a coach will let you know if you will be starting either at the front gate, the back gate, or the red gate through the second side of the building. No one should enter through these gates until a coach calls the class into the Gym Area at the start of class. Coaches will introduce themselves, and the gym, & briefly go over key rules at the beginning of class. Regardless of skill level the first few weeks of class (especially the first class) act as an introduction to our gym, its rules, and the basics of movement safety. That way we can ensure everyone is progressing on the same page for the rest of the session.
Only participants during scheduled times are allowed in the "Gym Area". This includes everything inside our fences & purple chains; mats, ninja equipment, & grey carpet-bonded foam.
What to expect during class this School Year?
As our gym grows our community of athletes grows with it, which is something we factor in each year as we design our lesson plans. Just like any sport, we will always work on the fundamentals with every class and student no matter the skill level. We want every class to feel fresh and evolve with the students so we lay out our lesson plans one month at a time. We keep our class sizes low to make sure we can give individual attention as much as possible leaving no reason for any student should feel left behind or even too advanced. Most classes teach a combination of three core disciplines Parkour, Freerunning, & Ninja Warrior obstacles in which we will work separately at times, as well as all together throughout the year. Some more advanced classes will focus on one to two of these core disciplines. During class, we will focus not on just physical ability but mental, how we think about moving our body. We will teach how to perform these movements efficiently but also donβt be alarmed to see your child on certain obstacles not getting it right away. We find it important not only to let them get that hands-on time on obstacles but also to learn how to problem-solve and navigate through an obstacle themselves. Our Taekwondo classes led by Mr. Ryan & our Adult (16+) Ninja & Obstacle Course Racing classes run by Coach Zac & AJ will have their own set of standards & expectations that they will go over.
Discipline
We have a wide variety of free-spirited youth that join us at UP! Our three main goals as instructors are to teach students how to efficiently navigate their bodies through, around, and over obstacles aka βLearning cool tricksβ. How to keep themselves and others around them SAFE while performing these movements and of course to have FUN! To ensure our goals we keep our classes light and fun but we do expect respect from every student. When instructors are talking, students are listening. No use of any obstacles, mats, platforms, etc without direct permission from the instructor. Students are expected to have a certain level of focus during class especially before and during performing any physical activity. This becomes especially vital for more advanced movements. It is difficult to trust a student or a class to work on more advanced movements when there is not enough focus to follow simple instructions like standing in line. Fun is expected but being too silly and not focused can be dangerous. Typically we will handle repeated misbehavior by temporally sitting a student. Anytime a student is putting themselves or another student in danger we take that very seriously even if the reason is just a lack of focus. Very rarely we will ask a student to go sit with parents but we will do so if the class is drastically being held back or distracted. If you notice your child sitting during class please feel free to reach out to us for feedback. Please no βsideline coachingβ during classes.
